80% of people in the Public Sector believe mobile to be more secure than paper!

As we move ever closer to 2020, when the NHS is scheduled to become paperless, we surveyed over 200 people in the Public Sector (including 51 NHS trusts) to find out how they plan to meet these targets. It seems that there is an overwhelming agreement that mobile working is a key part of the strategy for the NHS to become paper free. Not only is it believed to be more secure than paper, but offers many additional benefits such as the freeing up of clinician time that can then be allocated to patient care.

Developers from four NHS trusts and one local authority got together to create apps to connect citizens with services from the Public Sector. On hand to help throughout the event were NDL’s development team, graphic designers and services staff. Kicking off with an envisioning session where over 30 ideas for citizen and patient facing apps were proposed, it was then down to design and coding. In a short space of time nine new apps were built ranging from a library app to a personal health app that could share data captured by a patient with clinicians in an NHS Trust! More...

Two million man hours a year wasted as local authorities move to digital delivery

Local authorities are wasting two million man hours per year through the hidden costs of offering digital services, and this is set to grow significantly as digital delivery expands. This is the key finding of the National Digital Report, NDL’s annual survey into how technology is being used to support local authorities’ digital agenda. Overwhelmingly, authorities continue to state that they want to meet the challenge of budget cuts through channel shift and by extending their online services, but actual end-to-end delivery remains slow and inefficient. While some authorities have demonstrated significant savings through integrating front and back-office systems, there is widespread manual re-keying of data elsewhere. This is creating significant financial waste across both online delivery and contact centres using CRM systems, which have been at the heart of the digital agenda for more than a decade. More...

Through partnerships with local technology organisations such as NDL, it is delivering a wide range of products and technologies to enable people to live greener, healthier and more prosperous lives. We spoke to Michael Wignall, Government Industry Manager for Microsoft UK, about the programme, its aims, its successes and what it offers NDL’s community across the public sector. More...

Integrated PAS and clinical portal supports unified patient care pathway at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg

Real-time updating and synchronising of patient data between the Patient Administration System (PAS) and a ward-based clinical portal is now taking place across all facilities within Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board (ABMU). This brings together into one coherent data pathway the two halves of the Board which merged in 2009 and supports a key aim of the merger of allowing patients to transfer to and from any Board facility. The integration, which was developed in-house using NDL’s awi SX application integration platform, has also avoided the resource-heavy process of manually re-entering an estimated half a million items of data a year. Mobile working booms in healthcare, but misconceptions remain

Number of healthcare organisations with mobile working  projects more than doubles to 77% in little more than 12 months
Over three quarters (77%) of healthcare organisations now have live mobile working projects in place, up from just 30% a little over 12 months ago, according to a report produced by specialist software house NDL. However despite this rapid growth, suggesting the business case for mobile technology is largely proven, there are strong indications that project managers are still struggling to pinpoint the factors responsible for success or failure, suggesting growth could accelerate even faster in the future. Comment on Caldicott Report: The special importance of sharing data between the NHS and Social Services

Managing director of NDL, Declan Grogan commented: “During his response to the Caldicott report, Secretary of State Jeremy Hunt highlighted the particular challenges encountered when sharing data between social services and the NHS, and he was absolutely right to do so. If sharing data within one organisation (albeit one as disparate and diverse as the NHS) is tricky, sharing data between two or more organisations with such different cultures, is a challenge worthy of special attention. Yet dual users of the NHS and social services, which include dementia sufferers, abused children and drug users among others, are some of the most vulnerable members of society, making it all the more important that data in this area is shared successfully, in an accurate, efficient and timely manner. Fraud risk for Universal Credit is an early warning for shared services

The recent publicity about the potential for fraud in the Government’s flagship Universal Credit (UC) scheme generated a rash of headlines, both in the specialist and general media. However, relatively few of the media stories got down to the ‘nitty gritty’ of why the system was so open to fraud, although the Communities and Local Government Committee’s report ,which sparked the interest in the first place, made clear where the problem lay. A distinct lack of integration. More...
